Blogging is the newest way to get information out on the internet and is increasingly popular as a means of generating income and gaining a following. If you want to be a blogger, there are some simple ways to get your foot in the door.
1.
Step 1
Start a personal blog. This is a must if you want to be a blogger. It can be on any topic that you feel you have expertise and passion for. Some popular blog topics are travel, beauty, fashion, television and movies, and writing.
2.
Step 2
Choose a blog platform such as blogger.com or wordpress.com. Links to both blog networks are provided in the resources section below.
3.
Step 3
Pick a topic that you know will keep you interested. If you choose a topic to blog about that is of no interest to you, you won't generate interest from readers.
4.
Step 4
After you have started your blog, be sure to fill out your personal profile. This will give readers a chance to get to know more about you as the blogger.
5.
Step 5
Organize the blog. Unless your blog becomes really popular, adding Google Adsense won't help you make money but add it anyway. Organize the blog in an easy-to-read format.
6.
Step 6
Don't write long blog posts. Blog post typically do well between 300-700. You can go under or over this word count but make every word count. Because it's so easy to move on to the next web page, you want to be sure to catch and maintain your reader's interest.
7.
Step 7
Use pictures that relate to your posts. Always give credit to the photographer or copyright owner. You can also add a link to the photographer or copyright owner's web page.
8.
Step 8
At a minimum, add one blog post per week to your blog. Very successful blogs have multiple writers and several new posts a day. Devote what time you have to writing well and making it worth reading.
9.
Step 9
Don't stuff your blog with key words. Keywords don't work in keeping an audience. With a key word you can key word any key worded topic and lose readers in your key working. Was it necessary to use key wording that many times in that sentence? No. And your readers will see that as a clue that you are looking for page hits rather than a loyal audience.
10.
Step 10
If you are stumped for ideas, do a simple web search on your topic. You may find a web page you want to highlight or a new product you want to review. Subscribe to industry magazines or hit up your library's magazine section.
11.
Step 11
Choose a topic that is current. Blogging on the American Civil War is not a current topic. Blogging on the war in Iraq or terrorist is current and relevant to readers today.
12.
Step 12
Network with other bloggers. If you are a fan of their blog, they will probably be a fan of yours. This is a simple and effective advertising technique. You will also have a good idea of what audience is reading your work.
13.
Step 13
Check for spelling and grammer errors. Use a dictionary or thresaurus. Buy the AP Style Manual and use it when you are in doubt.
